The LS 13 320 measures the particle size distribution of particles in dilute suspension (40 nm to ~2 mm) and dry particles (400 nm to ~2 mm).

Reading Materials: NIST SP 960-1 especially chapters 1 and 7.

Manual drain & fill may be required; see instructions on the instrument. Let us know if you need help with manual fill and drain.

The Coulter LS320 measures particle sizes from 40 nm to 2,000 microns by laser light scattering (LS). It is based on the principle that light intensity scattered from particles is a function of scattering angle, particle size, shape, incident wavelength, and response of the material to light (optical properties, e.g., refractive index).

Calculations assume the particles are spherical and the scattering intensities obey the Mie model. The Mie model is the solution to Maxwell's equations for the interaction of spherical particles with electromagnetic plane waves. A 126 detector array allows 126 equations to solve for the unknown numbers of particles of each diameter. The LS 13 320 uses two light sources. A 780 nm diode laser is used for analysis in the size range from 400 nm to 2 mm. A tungsten halogen bulb and three filters (the PIDS assembly) generate wavelengths of 450, 600, and 900 nm. The PIDS assembly sizes in the range 40 to 800 nm. The advantages of this technique include ease of operation, large range of detectable particle sizes, and accuracy in the micron and sub micron range.

This LS 13 320 has three sample modules; the Universal Liquid Module (ULM) with a 125 ml sample vol, a Micro-Fluid Module (MFM) with a 12 ml sample volume, and a Dry Powder Module (DPM). The DPM & MFM size down to 400 nm, while the ULM sizes down to 40 nm. Sample amounts are a few tenths of a gram to grams of material. The ease of use and wide size range makes the LS 13 320 the work horse of particle sizers.
