Nanoscale Research Facility Virtual Open House
When is it?
February 26, 2026 9 am-3 pm (times are somewhat flexible)
Who are we?
The Nanoscale Research Facility (NRF) is a core research supporting facility at the University of Florida operating under the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Our facility is designed to provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for materials characterization and fabrication to the UF community and beyond.
What is the Virtual Open House?
Our open house is a showcase of our fancy, cutting-edge imaging equipment, presented virtually in an easy-to-understand format. It's like a field trip without the hassle of permission slips or travel.
What will I do during the Virtual Open House?
You will see Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Computed Tomography (CT) demonstrations geared toward K-12 students. We will explain how the tools work and take a very up-close look at some samples (insects, microchips, and plants). We are also open to requests for different materials to be investigated, especially if you want a solo session.
How do I access the event?
We have a virtual simulation of our building on GatherTown with spaces hosting demos and events. Make sure you register in advance, as the platform will only admit registered participants.
How should I prepare?
First, let's make sure you can access GatherTown on your school network. (If your school doesn't allow GatherTown, we can set up a solo session using Zoom). NRF can also assist you in creating an accompanying activity sheet or supplying some background information to cover before the event. Alternatively, you can just show up and ask lots of questions- let us do the teaching!
Can we discuss semiconductors?
Of course! Semiconductors are a specialty of our facility, and we are happy to discuss any or all the fabrication processes. We even have a video tour of our cleanroom available.
Can we visit you in person?
Maybe. The February 26th event is only virtual, but we could potentially arrange an in-person tour. However, we are a working lab facility with hazardous materials, and it can be tricky to accommodate large groups. Just ask us, and we'll see what we can do.
Can I attend at a different time?
Yes! If you can't make it on February 26th and/or want a session just for you, we are happy to schedule a more personalized experience with your class on another day of your choosing. We can even look at samples your class sends to the NRF (there will be some limitations, but our staff can work with you to find a good fit).
We look forward to seeing you on February 26th!
